The Negroni Ritual

A HISTORY LESSON TAUGHT THREE NEGRONIS AT A TIME

The Negroni ritual is a new flight available in the Daughters of ATLAS. Three Negronis, inspired by three moments in world history. From the ancient incense trade routes of Arabia, through the spice islands of Asia, to the great hotel bars of Prohibition-era Europe.

ATLAS NEGRONI

A classic Negroni, elevated by a single addition: frankincense, the aromatic resin of the Boswellia sacra tree, native to the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa.

For centuries, frankincense has been prized in perfumery, ceremony, and worship. Its distinctive aroma is powerful enough to stand alongside the bitter, herbal, and citrus notes of a Negroni without being overwhelmed.

It has perfumed great mosques and cathedrals, adorned the skin of royalty, and travelled vast distances as one of history's most treasured commodities. Carried to Bethlehem among the gifts presented at the birth of Jesus, frankincense has long been an offering reserved for the exceptional.

Gin's story begins in Europe but comes to fruition in Asia. Black pepper from India, nutmeg and mace from the Banda Islands, and clove from Indonesia helped shape the spirit's identity.

The Dutch seizure of the spice trade was a travesty that nonetheless connected the world. Through these newly established routes came a wave of Asian botanicals including lemongrass, yuzu, pandan, ginger, tea, and orchid.

Today, Asia is one of gin's most vibrant homes. The Philippines alone consumes more than 100 million litres annually, while Singapore has become a significant centre for gin culture, with ATLAS standing among the world's leading gin destinations.

By The Ounce remembers where it all began.

NEW AMSTERDAM

During Prohibition, from 1920 to 1933, many of New York's bartenders crossed the Atlantic, finding refuge in Europe's great hotel bars. These grand establishments became the beating heart of cocktail culture, preserving and advancing the craft while America remained dry.

At the same time, the Negroni, newly created in Florence in 1919, was beginning its journey across the continent, quickly earning its place behind the bar.

New Amsterdam sits at the intersection of these stories. A Negroni built on Dutch mercantile influence, recalling the city's original name, brought together through coffee. Whether espresso in Italy or an Americano in New York, every bartender has their cup.
